Welcome into the world of Split River Designs & Studios, a micro business consisting of two artists: David Wolters and Laurel Sprague. They are a husband and wife team who reside in northeast Tennessee with their two dogs, Luna and Nova.
David has worked with the medium of wood for the past twelve years. At first he used wood purely as a building material. Over time he has transformed it into a medium for art. By combining domestic and exotic hardwoods with dovetail joinery, lamination, wood bending, and wood turning techniques, he creates functional and non functional designs that stand apart from the mainstream. One of his objectives is to bring new design and style to traditional items. This is best seen in the original "Magnetic Knife Stand."
For the better part of the last decade, Laurel, has been a professional student. She holds a BFA in photography and a Masters of Humanities in fine art. Her work consists of photography, clay, and fiber. The photography used is one of three alternative processes: cyanotype (blue images), Van Dyke Brown (brown images), and emulsion lifts (small color images). Her most recent work concerns the inner and outer existences of human life represented through use of the natural world and medical imagery.
Whether David and Laurel are on the road to an art festival or busy working in their studios, they share the same goal: to live as artists. Thank you for taking a look at their work and for supporting the arts!
